Abstract
-
A descriptive, exploratory study of the workings of a medium-sized independent funeral home. The study describes the social forces both internal and external to the lived order of the funeral home.;This study focuses on social control, cultural proscription, impression management, institutionalization, role taking, role constraints, and ad hocing in the American funeral service. Through direct observation of the funeral setting I am able to provide detailed descriptions of the practices of the American funeral and the conditions which shape it. Through narrative description and analysis I report on the every day practices in an independently owned funeral home anbd how these practices are a reproduction of the social order common to American funeral homes.
