Abstract
This work traces the formation of a northern Italian industrial district specialized in the production of woolen textiles from the end of the 18 th century to the late 1980s. The object has been to explore and clarify the relationships between a trajectory of industrial development and regional culture in the evolution of a distinctive regional political economy. The larger problematic which this work engages the degree to which trajectories of capitalist development---specifically industrialization---are socio-culturally embedded or relatively autonomous as neo-classical growth and development theory predicts. The work in this context, evaluates competing theories of the origin, development, and nature of industrial districts.
