Abstract

This dissertation surveys the careers of two artists, Thomas Charles Farrer (1838--1891) and Henry Farrer (1844--1903), who were born in England and relocated to America. The elder brother, Thomas Charles Farrer came to the U.S. from London about 1857 and lived in New York until 1872 when he returned to England permanently. He was a founder of the Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art (1863) and an important member of the American Pre-Raphaelite circle.;Thomas Charles Farrer's younger brother, Henry Farrer, came to the U.S. about 1862. Although Henry Farrer's early work shows the influence of the American Pre-Raphaelites, his mature watercolor style consists of large-scale tonal landscapes. He exhibited his work at the American Water Color Society exhibitions from 1867 until his death in 1903. Henry Farrer was also a dedicated printmaker, producing many topographical etchings of the New York harbor as well as poetic landscape prints.;This study includes biographies of both artists, an analysis of their work, and a catalogue raisonne of the paintings, drawings, and prints they produced both in the U.S. and in England.
