A History of the Negro Ensemble Company: The First Sixteen Years (1967-1983) is an account of the founding of the Negro Ensemble Company (NEC), its development, operation, and accomplishments during the first sixteen years of its existence. The study includes the plays produced by the company and the persons who were involved in the productions. This study describes the operation of a theatre company that has not only survived almost constant financial struggles since its third season, but a company which has developed an impeccable reputation for excellent ensemble acting and has produced numerous African-American plays, artists, technicians, and managers.;The Negro Ensemble Company, founded in 1967 by Douglas Turner Ward, Robert Hooks, and Gerald S. Krone, with the financial support of the Ford Foundation, has achieved longevity as a theatre company. Its accomplishments are even more notable: (1) the NEC has developed a large body of plays, concerned with multifarious aspects of contemporary and past African-American life in diverse structures, themes, and styles of production and, concomitantly, has developed several African-American playwrights, through the company's playwright workshops; (2) the NEC has provided for the training and growth of a considerable number of the present artists of the theatre: actors, directors, designers, musicians, technicians, as well as for theatre managers and other business personnel; (3) the company has contributed greatly to the development of the present African-American theatre audience in the New York metropolitan area. Nationally and internationally, audiences have been enriched by selected NEC plays.;More plays concerned with contemporary African-American life have come from the NEC than from any other source. Quantity has not precluded quality, for excellence in the company's production of primarily original plays has been recognized.;This study provides documentation and analysis of a company that has contributed greatly to African-American, African-other, American, and world drama and theatre--a history of the Negro Ensemble Company from its inception through sixteen (1967-1983) of its twenty-five years, detailing its productions, workshops, business operations, tours, and projects. An overview of the company's activities since 1983 is included.
