Abstract: SoHo, New York transformed itself from a low-rent artist Bohemia (Boho) into an upscale, Bourgeois/Bohemian (Bobo) residential, dining and shopping district in the latter half of the 20th century. Utilizing historic data on the commercial establishments of West Broadway, SoHo's main thoroughfare, the thesis tracks the area from 1965-2000 as it progressed from decaying industrial zone to artistic community and later chic and gentrified neighborhood. Beginning in the 1960s, SoHo became an unplanned residential and arts neighborhood. Artists, clandestinely and illegally, moved into SoHo's large and low-rent industrial lofts. In the 1970s loft residences were legalized, and art galleries arrived in SoHo, creating a spontaneous avant-garde arts district in Manhattan. In the 1980s and through the 1990s, SoHo entered the Bobo stage represented by the arrival of more affluent, non-artist residents, the departure of SoHo's galleries, and the establishment of new high-end retail businesses unrelated to the arts.
