Abstract
This action research intends to show educators how to utilize relaxing music as a classroom behavior management tool, one that is able get students ready for learning by evoking the appropriate behaviors needed to focus inside a classroom. This study took place at an afterschool program where the action researcher teaches. Students in this setting regularly complete a snack/recess activity that is designed for recreation and socialization, before starting a homework activity, a task that requires steady focus. The action researcher examined how relaxing music could quell the distracted and hyperactive behaviors in her students. As a result, the action researcher opted to play baroque music for these students to help their transitions between activities. When teachers play music of a soft and slow pace such as baroque, it can encourage students to become focused for activities that call on the ability to listen and remain attentive. Listening to relaxing music in the classroom can be particularly helpful to students as they attempt to regain their focus during transitions between periods such as math, language arts, science, lunch, recess, gym, art and so on. Relaxing music not only aids educators in the management of negative classroom behaviors, but it can also create a harmonious environment that promotes better learning for the individual.;Keywords: classroom, behavior, baroque music, management, teacher, tools.
