This research project addresses the revision of prior canonical considerations leading to current theoretical principles of poetry translation. Until the last decade of the twentieth century, much of the debate regarding theory of translation opposed those considering it an unfeasible exercise against others who deemed translation of poetry as the essence or translation itself. These alternative points of view have been responsible for a new consideration of this literary endeavor in the last few years.;Aware of current issues on translation that combine parameters borrowed from the so-called literature of the margins and the connections between language, identity and nation, my project aims not only to define a new standard for translation itself but also to create a canonical area for the translation of Federico Garcia Lorca by Langston Hughes, an American poet of the Harlem Renaissance.;Although acknowledging the existence of a liminal space for translations has not presented many obstacles, demonstrating the theoretical and literary values of my claim for Hughes' work has proven to be an intricate and often complex task. With some methodological inspiration found in the studies on textual analysis by Henry Meschonnic, I have organized my own research around the validation of certain parameters for the analysis of translations. This theoretical framework has allowed me to identify two major components in the study of both Lorca's and Hughes' poetic discourse: a political and a poetic one, each of them reflecting specific levels of meaning. While focusing on these two levels in their poetry, I have not ignored other literary values of Hughes' translation of Lorca's Romancero Gitano. The encounter of the two poets in the process of translation stems from deeper connections in personal experiences, and also in the similarities in both poets' search for inspiration. Their common interest in the aesthetic possibilities of popular culture, along with a natural talent for poetic innovation, yields what is considered an exemplary case of modernity, both in form and content.;Hughes' aesthetic quest made possible a unique journey to deeper levels of meaning that he was able to decipher, led by poetic images and metaphors hidden from other translators of Garcia Lorca's Romancero Gitano. It is in Hughes' work that we can support my idea regarding the existence of different levels in the poetic discourse. The ones that I have categorized are visible only to those sharing a common poetic and emotional ground, a necessity for hiding emotions in the possibilities offered by the stanzas, and available only to anyone receptive to their lyrical message.;My analysis of the aesthetics and literary riddles of Hughes' translation sheds new light on the study of Garcia Lorca's poetry. However, since many of the references used have been drawn from aesthetic principles of a foreign origin to the Spanish literary scholar, it has been necessary to add a good deal of historical research, thus providing the necessary background for a better understanding of Langston Hughes. This background will make it easier to understand why both his society and his experiences in it were significant at the time of his delving into the complexities of Lorca's work.
