Abstract
-
The narrative work of Luis Mart(')in-Santos--in its totality--is the object of this study. If short in extension--three published titles--its intellectual depth and its new stylistic approach has already claimed an important place in contemporary Spanish literature. We try to demonstrate in this study that the work of Luis Mart(')in-Santos is, fundamentally, the expression of an intellectual mind that projected in literature his vision of man and the society of his time, with all the historical and ideological implications that the writer had outlined in various scientific studies and especially in Libertad, temporalidad y transferencia en el psicoanalisis existencial. In other words, we feel that there does exist a close relationship between the scientific and the philosophical thoughts of the author and his literary creation. The writer, in our opinion, uses literature as a vehicle to reaffirm his existential concept of life, his ideas of the freedom of the individual against his limitations and to advocate the obligation of man to find in his existential project the essence of his nature and the fundaments of his own dignity. Our work consists of a panoramic view of the Spanish novel after the Civil War, followed by a chrono-biography of Luis Mart(')in-Santos. The fictional work is analyzed chronologically: Tiempo de silencio, Apologos y Tiempo de destruccion. In an appendix we comment on the first and last books by the author: the book of poems Grana Gris and the short drama Prometeo, respectively. A comprehensive bibliography and copies of manuscripts by the writer complete the study.
