Abstract
-
Albert Samain lived from 1858 to 1900. In view of the scantiness of available biographical information, I directed my research to a close study of the works of Samain, with an especial consideration of his themes, of his sensibility, of his elegiac and dreamy poems, of his imagery and of his versification.;Most students of that period have focused on the more powerful masters or on the eccentrics. It is my conviction that the poetry of Albert Samain deserves a rehabilitation, as does, more generally, poetry which expresses a humble, dolorous sensibility and does not aim at changing life, but at adorning it through beauty and a deep attachment to what Wordsworth had called "the still, sad music of humanity.".;I studied Samain's poetical themes and style in light of the Symbolist movement with special emphasis on Mallarme's esthetism, Verlaine's impressionism, and Baudelaire's symbolism.;In conclusion, a reappraisal of Samain's contribution to literature is suggested with a new understanding of his prose, his correspondence, and of his drama Polypheme.
