Abstract
-
More than twenty years after his death, no systematic study of the art of Roger Martin du Gard has been undertaken, more precisely a textual review of Les Thibault, the novel which gave our author the Nobel Prize of literature in 1937.;Critics have reflected upon the ideas of Roger Martin du Gard, studied his sources, his method of research. But nobody seems to have paid attention to a phenomenon inherent to the Thibault: through what art does the author succeed in transforming us into spectators who are slowly drawn into the novel, who participate in the creation of its atmosphere, the progress of its action, the lives of its characters?;We have not analyzed Les Thibault through an exclusive slant. We wanted the text speak for itself as we examined the "ecriture" of the novel, the manner in which the story is told, the point of view of the author, the dramatization, the decors, the role of the objects and the characters who inhabit this "stream of flesh".;We hope that, without bringing great revelations, this modest work can contribute to a more precise understanding of the Thibault and add a certain perspective to the place of Roger Martin du Gard in the novel of the twentieth century.
