Abstract
In this Spanish language dissertation the life of Miguel Hernandez from childhood to death has been followed; his poetry has been studied and analyzed as a consequence of his life and the challenges that destiny presented to him.;There are eight chapters: the child and adolescent, the young man, the man-poet, the soldier-poet, the defeated, the prisoner, presentiments of death and the works of Hernandez as reviewed by the critics. The conclusions and the bibliography are at the end of the thesis. The notes are at the end of each of the eight chapters.;Special attention has been given to his first verses and those written in contact with the home town Orihuela. We have grouped these under the titles of, "Poemas de la Tierra Huertana," and "Primeros Poemas Sueltos." We have tried to point out the influences of his life experiences that produced his poetry.;The following books or series of poetry by Hernandez have been analyzed in chronological order, bearing in mind his life experiences: (Perito en lunas, El rayo que no cesa (and the two previous outlines, Imagen de tu huella y El silbo vulnerado), Viento del pueblo, "Poemas sueltos", El hombre acecha, Cancionery y romancero de ausencias and "Ultimos poemas." We have also studied in the same manner the books or outlines of his plays: Quien te ha visto y quien te ve y sombra de lo que eras, El torero mas valiente, Los hijos de la piedra, Teatro de guerra, El labrador de mas aire, and Pastor de la muerte, paying special attention to those written in verse.;A large number of letters written and received by the poet, shedding light on the works he produced, have been included. We have taken into account, because of their influence on the poetry of Hernandez, the environment in his home town, the customs and the land where he lived.;The poems that show the poet's presentiments of death, the symbols in his work, his important contribution of the inclusion in his writings of words that the people use, little used words, or new special meanings given by the poet to common words, have been analyzed carefully. We look deeply into the poems written during the war and in the various jails after the Spanish Civil War. There is a clear warning that these poems are influenced by his passion, pain, his personal tragedy as well as the tragedy of the times.;We have compiled the important criticism of his works from his death to the present in order to do justice to one of most authentic examples of Spanish poetry in this century. The conclusions that are reached demonstrate that the works of Hernandez were always influenced by his life experiences and his presentiments of death.
