Abstract
Juan Jose Arreola, a Mexican writer born in 1918, began to write during the decade of 1940. At this moment, the Mexican narrative had become, thematically and stylistically, somewhat hackneyed and repetitive. In spite of the efforts of different groups and the personality of very dedicated literary figures as Alfonso Reyes, Julio Torri, Agust(')in Yanez and Jose Revueltas, the general monotony continued, as a revolving door, around the historical fact of the Mexican Revolution. Conscious of the situation, Arreola, although he was not alone in his effort, began to change the entire panorama of the Mexican narrative, particularly the short story.;Arreola was not, however, a "complete" writer from the very beginning; as many others, he is the product of an obvious intellectual and artistic evolution. His narrative can, therefore, be divided into two majors stages. The first one begins in 1941 with the publication of "Un cuento de Navidad" and ends in 1947 with "Parabola del trueque". His second and prolonged stage starts in 1949 with the publication of "El cuervero" and ends with his "Clausulas" of 1966. After this year Arreola does not produce anything that really transcends his previous artistic work. In 1963 he published his only novel, La feria, a book that, in general, summarizes, thematically and stylistically, his literary career.;During his first stage Arreola searched for some models or styles and some literary forms which best molded the themes which permeated the spiritual and cultural atmosphere of that period. By the end of the decade of 1940 and particularly during the first lustrum of the fifties, Arreola is a different writer, a chronicler of his time communicating his world view through a variety of literary forms.;This dissertation will follow systematically the steps of Arreola the writer from his naive and, at times, overwhelming thematic idealism and certain formal timidity, to the negation, at times radical, of the most sacred values of Western civilization. It will also give an account of Arreola's elimination of certain verbosity and solemnity present in his first stage. Its main purpose will be to illuminate Arreola's work by pointing out his struggle to create a different narrative, one that finally gave him a permanent place within the development of the Mexican short story.
