Abstract
-
Psychoanalytic theories of feminine identity were critically reviewed and the four feminine identity types which were most frequently referred to were identified. The types were definitive feminity, vaginal femininity, phallic femininity and masochistic femininity. The factors leading to the development of each of the types were discussed. The typical fantasy associated with each type was described. It was suggested that a woman's type could be diagnosed by determining which was her dominant fantasy, and various means by which this could be measured were outlined. In conclusion it was suggested that parents and significant others in the girl's environment develop fantasies about what type of female she is which affect the types of behavior they notice and respond to positively. This is an important aspect of the girl's socialization and influences the fantasies she develops about her type of femininity.
