Abstract
Rousseau's personal writings represent the culmination of a long process of his psychological development. The influence of his family training, of his environment added to his original character made him believe that he was a certain kind of person. As he grew older, the idea of his uniqueness--first hesitant and uncertain--became increasingly a certitude. Because of that, his life was tortured by a constant discrepancy between what he strongly believed he was and the external image given of him by his friends and his contemporary writers. He devoted himself to his self-awareness, and by this means, he disclosed certain enigmatic and contradictory traits of his character.;Numerous critics and analysts have studied his psychological and philosophical principles. Those who are most concerned about the specific problems of Rousseau's personal existence have attempted to take into account the accuracy of certain facts, the evidence of either his guilt or his innocence. Some have questioned the sense of his literary vocation.;Unlike those previous studies, our main object will be to deal with the methodological aspect of Rousseau's autobiography. We will keep in view the writer's effort to treat his personality as a subject of conscious and deliberate reflection. How has he proceeded to clarify the meaning of his inner feelings through the medium of writing, what technique has he used to succeed, will be the main concern of the present study.
