Abstract
This study focuses on the reappearance of a variety of characters in the narrative work of Valle-Inclan; reappearance in essentially the same form and reappearance in a modified but recognizable form.;We begin by analyzing the persons that appear in the first short stories of Jard(')in umbr(')io, which we encounter again in later works. The narrator of Jard(')in umbr(')io, although he appears to be the same in some of the short stories, pesents problems of identification. In Flor de Santidad we study the primitive and superstitious society of Galicia, in the characters Adega and El Peregrino. We have included also in this study, the "Comedias barbaras", that although not novels, have been considered may times as part of the narrative work of the author. They represent the feudal environment of an ancient society whose laws, institutions and way of life are destined to disappear, as we see in the family of Montenegro and especially in the protagonist, Don Juan Manuel.;We continue with the four Sonatas, whose narrator, el Marques de Bradom(')in, places us in an environment that changes with the disposition and the age of the protagonist-narrator. The Sonatas represent the four seasons of the year, which in turn symbolize the changes the narrator experiences in the stages of his life: youth, exuberance of life, maturity and old age.;In the Guerras carlistas the author is concerned with Spanish society and its people. He looks long and hard at the problems of succession to the Spanish throne; first at the pretender--Don Carlos--and his followers, and then at those that abuse power such as occurred with Isabel II and her court. In the latter case, we find the reasons for the decadence of the nobility and their values, so well studied in El Ruedo Iberico. In this context, Tirano Banderas is also discussed, showing the political implications in Latin America.
