Abstract
In the history of Spanish literature the esperpentos of Ramon del Valle-Inclan and the tragedias grotescas of Carlos Arniches represent two of the best examples of the multiple manifestations of the grotesque in contemporary Spanish drama. Similarities between the tragedias grotescas and the esperpentos are evident not only in the predominant themes of these works, but also in the concept of the modern tragic hero, in the deforming techniques utilized by both authors, and in their manipulation of language to express the chaos and distortions of Spanish society.;The present study contains a detailed history of the grotesque in art and literature, a detailed analysis of the theories of the grotesque most widely recognized, and a brief review of the grotesque tradition in Spanish literature and art. The dramatic techniques and linguistic innovations present in the works of Arniches and Valle-Inclan are examined utilizing this theoretical framework established in the first chapters of the study.;The grotesque, as a general rule, flourishes during periods of significant social and political upheaval and, in most instances, represents an effort by the artist to express the contradictions of the surrounding world, the absurd and defenseless condition of the hero, and the irrational forces and conflicting emotions which govern his behavior. Consequently, the present study examines the social and political events which drastically transformed Spanish society during the first decades of the twentieth century; it establishes the impact of the events in the lives of Arniches and Valle-Inclan; and, finally, draws parallels between the treatment of social reality in the works of both authors.;The last section of the study traces the possible influence of popular dramatic literature, and in particular the genero chico, in the tragedias grotescas and the esperpentos. In addition, a comparison of the linguistic creations of Arniches and Valle-Inclan is included.
