Abstract
-
The post-1965 increase in Caribbean immigration to New York City created a demand for services to meet the needs of this new population. Research identified health related services as one of this population's critical needs.;Because there is no organized structure to respond to these issues, this project was designed to develop a structure that would fill that vacuum. It was intended as a vehicle to institutionalize a health care advocacy group on behalf of Caribbean immigrants in New York City.;The strategy used was to convene a health conference to foster discussion between participants drawn from health, academic, immigration, and government organizations, to address the issues. The conference objectives were to: (1) Provide updated information on health care services to immigrants; (2) Explore the cultural variables within the Caribbean community as they relate to provision and usage of health services; (3) Mobilize participants around immigrant health issues; (4) Organize a formal advocacy structure responsive to the health care needs of Caribbean immigrants in New York City.;The exploratory design of this study permitted the use of various devices: (a) literature review; (b) convening a health conference; (c) conducting field tours in the Caribbean and (d) organizing a Caribbean health advocacy group. The work presents a multidisciplinary convergence, drawing on management sciences, health science, social science and social work advocacy.;Caribbean immigration to the United States presents a unique opportunity for studying a host of migration related problems, such as the health consequences of migration and culture change, psycho-social adjustment problems, patterns of socio-cultural conditioning which serve as barriers to the provision and use of health care services.;Based on the data analysis the following recommendations were made: (1) The status of undocumented aliens creates great stress for which new legal remedies should be found. (2) The City should provide culturally compatible programs targeted to the Caribbean communities. (3) Training programs for health professionals should include Caribbean culture. (4) Health care programs should include folk health approaches. (5) Programs responding to immigration related adjustment problems, need to be instituted.
