Abstract
-
This dissertation attempts to study thoroughly the short stories of the Colombian author who lived from 1858 to 1940, Tomas Carrasquilla, in order to demonstrate his literary merits and the multiple factors that play a role in his creative process.;In the first chapter his twenty stories are grouped into five categories: folkloric-religious stories, moral-religious stories, stories about children, stories of social criticism and those with a pyschological focus, so as to emphasize Carrasquilla's interests and to highlight the similarities and differences of the stories and the range of his themes.;The second and third chapters deal with the language he employs: his use of adjectives, nouns, verbs, etc. to achieve certain literary effects and the variety and impact of his popular vocabulary, which is exemplified in four lists that appear in the appendix: a short one of proverbs, another of archaisms and two longer ones of re-gionalisms, Colombianisms and Americanisms, and of familiar expressions.;The humor in Carrasquilla's short stories is analyzed specifically in the fourth chapter, taking into consideration different theories about humor, especially those of Henri Bergson.;The last chapter concentrates on the characterization, usefulness and development of various protagonists and some secondary figures in Carrasquilla's stories. Using as a basis E. M. Forster's statements on "flat" and "round" characters, the analysis proceeds from the "flat" characters to the more complex.
