Abstract
-
The formal objective of this study was to test a set of hypotheses concerning the dissemination of extramural, police-related research to operational police commanders and the utilization of these materials by these commanders.;To test the hypotheses involved, all of which argued against a finding of high value of police-related research, a study design was constructed which consisted of two structural elements, a survey questionnaire and a structured interview. A total of one hundred and twenty three (123) police commanders from eleven (11) large urban police departments participated in the study, all of them responding to the questionnaire and ten (10) of them participating in the interview portion.;The results generated by the questionnaire portion are disturbing and bleak. With respect to awareness of police-related research, its relevance, its use, and the research development and dissemination process in general, the survey respondents reported a low degree of satisfaction. This rather negative picture is confirmed by the results of the interview portion of the study.;The study concludes with a number of recommendations to improve the development and dissemination of police-related research.
