Abstract
This study examines the relationship between the internal power structure and the affiliative network of a local trade union (Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, New York City). It describes the salient elements of the Local's power apparatus, including its organizational structure, administrative mechanisms and electoral processes. It then delineates the principal features of Local 3's affiliational base, particularly its extensive system of non-wage benefit programs and its elaborate array of social associations, e.g., clubs. Ultimately, this study attempts to identify forms of interpretation between these tandem dimensions, concentrating upon the ways in which the affiliative network supports/stabilizes the Local's power regime.
