Abstract
-
The central objective of this dissertation is the thorough analysis of El siglo pitagorico y Vida de don Gregorio Guadana, published in France in 1644, by Antonio Enriquez Gomez, a Spanish Marrano author (1600-1663). Up to date, there is only one modern critical edition of this rare book.;This dissertation is comprised of five chapters. The first chapter deals with the biography of the author which up to a decade ago was enveloped in mystery. Born to a family of Spanish Judaizers, who suffered the religious persecution of the Spanish Inquisition for few generations, the author had to flee to France, only to return thirteen years later to Spain, where he was eventually captured and tried by the Inquisition in whose jail he died. His entire work reflects his plight and aspiration for recognition of his rights to have social and religious equality inspite of his religious background.;The second chapter depicts the author's wrath and resentment with the lack of religious equity and freedom in XVII century Spain, as a result of the malice and lack of real Christian spirit and charity on part of the Inquisition, which he calls 'the Tribunal of the devil'. All his adversity in life was caused by the Inquisition, which not only denied him and the multitude of his coreligionists--the so called 'New Christians'--recognition, but confiscated their property, tried them secretly, imprisoned them in secret jails without the right of facing their denouncers nor of being informed of the charges against them, and finally burned them in its diabolic autos de fe.;The third chapter analyses the Picaresque aspects of the novel, with stress on the themes of honor nobility and virtue, which reflect the Marranos' negative attitude about inherited nobility.;The fourth chapter analyses the figurative language and various figures of speech which Antonio Enriquez Gomez employs in depicting XVII century Spanish society.;The fifth chapter explains and analyses the Pythagorean doctrine of the transmigration of the souls, which gave the title to this novel.
