Abstract
-
The Italian nationalist Joseph Mazzini (1805-1872) spent more than half of his adult life as an exile in England, during which periods (1837-1848, 1850-1859, 1861-1868) he was in contact with many major figures of the age, both British and foreign. At this time, Mazzini founded several organizations in support of the cause of Italian unification and wrote some of his most important works, including his major tome, The Duties of Man. He also followed closely the course of the Chartist and the Radical movements in Britain. This dissertation examines the effect of this period of exile on Mazzini's writings, policies, and political thought, and his influence upon his contemporaries.
