Abstract
-
The following cycles of music are solos, duets and chamber ensemble compositions, all of which were conceived as real time improvisations. As indicated in the composer's notes, the flute and saxophone cycles are intended to be interpreted freely, while all other movements are strictly notated throughout so as to allow either improvising artists or any other performer to realize the music according to their own capabilities.;The spontaneous compositions for solo woodwinds began as improvisations that were performed and recorded on their respective instruments prior to being transcribed, while all other compositions in the cycle were improvised on synthesizers before being notated electronically. All of the latter compositions, therefore, can be executed as computer sequences in addition to their capabilities as scores for acoustic instruments that can be performed live. These cycles are intended to demonstrate the changing role of improvisation in twentieth-century composition.
