Abstract
-
An examination of the available professional, personal, political, and social information on each of the 85 generals on active duty with the Spanish Army on the eve of the outbreak of the Civil War of 1936-1939, in an effort to determine the existence of any common factors which may help to explain the choices made by those officers to support or oppose the military uprising of July 1936. As such, this study is a combination of an historical examination of Spanish political and military life during the period preceding the Civil War and a social and professional profile of the generals as a group and as members of the various subgroups into which they may be divided, such as africanistas, Nationalists, and Loyalists. On this basis, allowing for differences due to branch of service and personal inclinations, the generals can be shown to be a remarkably homogeneous group socially and professionally, but quite heterogeneous in their political views and their relationships with the principal political leaders of the Republic. On this basis, the generals organizing and supporting the Nationalist uprising of July 1936 can be shown to have not been significantly different either socially or professionally, nor politically or in terms of personal relationships with the principal Republican leaders, from those generals who proved most active in resisting the uprising.
