Abstract
-
We study the occurrence of massless fractionally charged states in the context of Gepner compactification. These states appear as the result of the breaking of the gauge group using a Wilson-line-like construction. A general method is provided to implement the latter. These exotic states appear to be generically produced. This is checked explicitly in the 3{dollar}\sp5{dollar} theory for a variety of Wilson lines. Focusing on the four-generation model, we analyze in detail the twisted sectors which contain them. We show that they pair up and gain a mass as one moves from Gepner'point in the moduli space.
