Abstract
Fiction and autobiography combine to form a new genre: fictitious autobiography as represented in Miguel de Unamuno's Como se hace una novela, Carmen Martin Gaite's El cuarto de atras and Jorge Semprun's Autobiografia de Federico Sanchez.;Comparative analysis of the three works reveals how Unamuno, Martin Gaite and Semprun create their respective works from similar circumstances of isolation: Unamuno from his self imposed exile in Paris, Martin Gaite from the aloneness of a stormy night and insomnia and Semprun from the perspective of his expulsion from the Spanish Communist Party. The story that emerges in each case combines autobiographical facts and fictitious elements without distinction.;Isolation prohibits Unamuno, Semprun and Martin Gaite from completing the narrative process which entails not only the elaboration of the story but also its narration. Their respective works represent the solution to the dilemma of finding the right listener at the appropriate moment. Through the work, the listener can be created and the narrative process completed. Through the combination of fictitious and autobiographical elements, the authors create their own reality in which everything is possible.
