Abstract
This study deals with the problems of authorship, date of composition, and the literary structure of the PMC by reexamining all pertinent textual evidence from a strict historical and philological standpoint as well as a number of Latin sources that were never fully explored. It begins with an analysis of different views and theories regarding the poem and its possible author(s) from the XVII century, when the poem was first made an object of study, up to the present, when the traditional explanation of the poem is undergoing a radical revision. As expected, special attention is given to the theories of Menendez Pidal and the "neotradicionalista" school that prevailed in the first half of this century, and still happens to have many followers.;A close analysis of the Historia Roderici, the first biography of Rodrigo Diaz written in Latin towards the end of the XII century, and the PMC composed at the beginning of the XIII century, has yielded more than just a simple and general similarity of the exploits of Rodrigo Diaz narrated in these two works. It has revealed, in fact, that the poet made extensive use of this important Latin source as the basis of the "Second cantar" of the PMC. Other possible Latin sources of the poem are similarly analyzed here for the first time. The vocabulary and the versification of the three "cantares" are studied from a new perspective. The study ends with a new hypothesis about the authorship and structure of the poem.
