Abstract
This dissertation examines the theme of the journey in the narrative of Ricardo Guiraldes. The first chapter contains a brief survey of the literature generated by the theme of the journey, with emphasis on the moments of its evolution that might have influenced Guiraldes and his work. In the second chapter we establish a detailed and chronological list of his own journeys, considering the knowledge of the author and his travelling activity an indispensable point of departure. In the third chapter we reconstruct his private and fragmentary theory of the journey. In the fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth chapters we analyze his novels: Don Segundo Sombra, Raucho, Rosaura and Xaimaca from the point of view of the journey. In the sixth chapter we discuss the notion of peregrinatio and apply it to two of his novels: Don Segundo Sombra and Raucho. In an afterword we reflect on the relationship between the author's practice and theory of the journey and its textualization in his novels.
