Abstract
-
The Quiet American takes place in Saigon in the 1950's when the territory was considered French Indo-China. It is the story of Thomas Fowler, an English newspaperman, his girlfriend, an eighteen year old Vietnamese girl named Phuong, and Alden Pyle, the naive young American diplomat who tries to come between them. In addition to attempting to protect Phuong from the middle-aged (and married) Fowler, Pyle's extends his "good works" into the political sphere about which his Harvard education has in no way prepared him, a fact of which he is completely oblivious. Consequently he ends up on the hit list of the many political factions that were active in this period of Vietnamese history, not to mention Fowler's. Musically, the political conflicts are depicted by contrasts between the sound world of Southeast Asia, in which there is the sense of unmeasured time (as in much of Takemitsu's later music), and the busyness and bustling of the European scene.
